To my dismay I noticed that they were all wearing identical neon-green t-shirts with the infamous Che visage boldly printed on the front. To prove a point to my companions, I told them I'd pay the tab for the entire night if just one of the misguided students pressed against our table like sardines could both a) identify and correctly pronounce the name of the man on their spiffy new shirt and b) tell me why they admired him. I made my point after speaking to about five of them and drank for free into the wee hours, dangers of zyban.
I'm no expert on the man, but I've definitely gone further out of my way over the last 20 years to be able to form an honest, objective opinion of his deserved legacy than the vast majority of my peers - a desire based in large on my early exposure to a book on the Cuban Revolution which my parents had in their house. I'll shut up now. Spend the money you're thinking of laying down for one of these incredibly inappropriate (you now know that Che vehemently disliked artists and musicians) t-shirt, dog tag or knit hat symbols of your progressiveness and spend it instead on a book like The Che Guevara Myth and the Future of Liberty

Seriously, get over yourself!
Do you expect every guy who wears a Bob Marley t-shirt to keep tabs on the latest reggae music acts and know all the philosophical underpinnings of the rasta movement? Or do you perhaps think that every souvenir buyer should learn the local language in advance so as to distinguish between “Welcome to Greece” and “Help me, I’m stupid” written on the back of their swimming suits?
Same applies to Che Guevara… to many, he looks kinda cool, glamorous, with piercing, haunting eyes – something between a rock star and a rebel – as Andy Garcia pointed out some time ago. And no, you don’t have to be a 1st year disoriented college girl or gay to acknowledge that.
Further, I wouldn’t get too cocky if I were you… chances are you’re going to pay the drink for the whole table one of these days if you keep doing that!
With all the merchandise out there, movies and songs made about the man as well as a general anti-anti-communism feeling after the end of the cold war, quite a few people actually do become informed (even if, for the most part, it is a heavily retouched version of the original). Unfortunately for me I can’t drink on your money… then again, I’m no longer under 25, I don’t hang around that area, and most importantly I don’t own/wear Che t-shirts and never did.
Only a couple of points though:
1) Dissecting an individual without fully considering the political/social/historical context that produced him, could make even the most saint-like ruler a ruthless killer.
2) The history is always written by the winners. The difference between a hero and a villain many times boils down to whose side you fought on.
3) Murder should not ever be justified or condoned, not even in the form of a “just cause” or “collateral damage”. So what’s the difference between a wacko who’s willing to walk the walk and pay the ultimate price for his ideology, and a cowboy who sits comfortably in a chair while thousands of soldiers and innocents die unwillingly because of his actions? Would you be satisfied if George Bush t-shits would be sold in equal amounts?

Seriously though, I appreciate your well thought out points and you’re right. That doesn’t change my main point, however, that the recent movie is another in a long line one-sided Che promoting and if folks knew more about his very dark side they’d be a lot less likely to rock those shirts.

Thanks for the comment, even the irony in it! Regarding the movie I have to agree with you 100% … except very few scenes and remarks, everything was doctored to death (of Che)!
That said, let’s not forget we all were 15-25 once… even if those kids would know everything about Che, some of them would still wear those t-shirts I think. There’s a time in one’s life when, for various strange reasons, you feel like screaming “I hate you, I don’t like you, everything sucks!” to your parents, teachers, establishment. Wearing Che on your chest is perhaps some teenager’s way of saying/showing that without so many words, that’s my take on it anyway.
I appreciate your comments but i thik it is important to rememeber that ‘Che’ is a espanish film not an english one. It is not a film for Yankies. A hostile or equivicating film is not going to play in South America. There, in popularity, Guevara comes 3rd; after Simon Bolivar and Jesus coming 2nd
